The checkerboarding rainbow van is one of the many innovations that have helped make the Van Checkerboard a popular attraction in the capital.CBC News has been told the van, which is located on the edge of the city’s shopping district, is the citys first ever permanent van checkering, as it’s the only one in the city.
The van is the brainchild of one Vancouver-based artist, who’s been creating the van for over a decade.
The van is painted a rainbow colour to give the impression of the colour of the sky, and it’s adorned with colorful lights that float over the busy street.
“It’s a big success and we have been really pleased with the response,” said Cara, who asked to only be identified by her first name.
The Van Checkers have also made headlines for other things, including an attempt to take over a local bar, and the creation of a van that would make people stop and stare at it for 30 minutes.
“The van checks in and out of the street and we do not have to stop and wait in the street, so that was the idea behind it,” Cara said.
The art installation, which has become one of Victoria’s most popular, is still in the early stages, with Cara not sure when it will be complete.
“I really don’t know when we will be finished,” she said.
